Lookng For Velazquez

In 2019, I made a trip to Spain to examine Velazquez's life and work.  I was interested in tracking down his childhood home in Seville and look at his paintings, including his portraits of performers from the king's court that rival Rembrandt for their skill and depth.

Velazquez was a mysterious figure with a cloaked past who rarely signed his work and produced less than 200 paintings, yet his unique skills with a brush have inspired artists for centuries, including: Picasso, Manet, Francis Bacon, and Chuck Close.

I came away with some startling information regarding Velazquez's family history and the secret he shared with King Philip that could have cost him his career.

Looking for Velazquez may shake what you think you know about this great artist.
